Week 3 Plan: Brainstorming, Websites And… Planning

I picked up a Moleskin pocket planner for half price over the weekend. I’ve always wanted something like this. I went to an Office Max to buy mini pens to go with it, but they didn’t have any. I ended up ordering the pens from Amazon.

My Moleskin Pocket Calendar

That's me in the background. :)

This is the first time I’ve tried doing a weekly plan like this so I’ll probably get better as the weeks go by. I didn’t come up with too many things because I leave for San Diego on Thursday (the tai chi push hands competition).

Here’s what I will get done this week:

  • Finish the Black Horse Tai Chi redesign.
  • Create a detailed plan for launching Social Milwaukee (my social media consultancy)
  • Get the New Loud’s new website ready to go live.
  • Brainstorm a way to get “founding members” for the MilTownKlan

I’ll let you know how it goes next Monday.

New Blogging Schedule And Recap Of Last Week

After looking at my journal entries from this past week, I realized they were all in a style not congruent with or too long for blog posts. I came up with a new system for this blog.

The New Schedule For Posting

Monday – A recap of what I got done the previous week.

I’m still going to write in a journal everyday but instead of using each entry as a blog post, I’m going to summarize all of my entries from the week into one recap post.

Tuesday – Post my plan for the week.

Every Sunday I’m going to make a plan for what I want to get done for the week. I’ll share that plan on Tuesday and compare it to what I actually got done the following Monday.

Wednesday and Thursday – An article about Pwning Life

I won’t necessarily post something EVERY Wednesday and Thursday. An article might be some thoughts I have about Pwning Life, a book or movie review, a website or blog review, a review of some software, app or technology that helps with Pwning Life… You know. An article.

Friday – An article about a Pro at Pwning Life.

I have this idea about interviewing people that are “Pwning Life.” Doing one interview a week would be a lot of work so between interviews I’ll write about someone from History or a person presently Pwning something (music, business, sports, etc.)

Recap Of Last Week

I wish I posted a plan last week so I could compare it to today’s recap. :) The plan that I post is always going to focus on my 12 month goals. Doing one thing each day that brings you closer to your goals is MAJOR. This week I’ll break it down by day and I’ll put the goal it’s working toward in parenthesis:

  • Monday: Mailed my registration for the Push Hands tournament in San Diego (get 25 tai chi students)
  • Tuesday: Watched a series of videos about Internet Marketing and made notes (Make $5,000/month)
  • Wednesday: Wrote a detailed plan with dates for getting 25 tai chi students, ordered t-shirts for tai chi and called my teacher (get 25 tai chi student)
  • Thursday: Updated my personal finances and settled a lawsuit. Nice. (have a clean credit report and repaying all debts)
  • Friday: Finished organizing my finances, started this blog and payed for my college class (credit report, life coach and… the school thing is longer than 12 months. :) )

This weekend I hung out with my girlfriend and put a lot of thought into this blog. :) I get things done on the weekend, but the weekends usually aren’t as productive as the week since so much is going on (shows, my girl, clubs, movies, etc.)

I think this bite-size format should be a much easier way for me to share my progress and for you do digest it.

Let me know what you think!

Pwning Life Day 2

The first week of these journal entries weren’t supposed to be published as blog posts. I’m noticing that now as I edit them. This will be a constant evolution…

January 9th, 2011

Since the title of this blog is “Pwning Life” I should probably give you the back story of the name.

The Birth of Pwning Life

Before pwning life, there was just pwning. Before pwning, there was owning. Everyone knows the traditional meaning of own, here’s what it is for us gamers (from Urban Dictionary):

own – 731 up, 148 down
1.To win a round in a game. (usually a video/pc game)
2.To beat someone at a game.(usually a video/pc game)
3. To be better at someone. (usually a video/pc game)

Through a misspelling of own, pwn was born. Once pwn hit critical mass it ran through the internets like a digital wildfire. Here again is the most popular definition from Urban Dictionary. Make note of huge up/down vote difference between own and pwn.

PWN (verb) – 10208 up, 693 down

1. An act of dominating an opponent.

2. Great, ingenious; applied to methods and objects.

Originally dates back to the days of WarCraft, when a map designer mispelled “Own” as “Pwn”. What was originally supose to be “player has been owned.” was “player has been pwned”.

Pwn eventually grew from there and is now used throughout the online world, especially in online games.

I’m a gamer so, like any gamer, pwn become a part of my lexicon on and offline.

“You got pwned!”
“I’ll PWN you in Halo 3!”
“My Geometry Wars score fucking PWS!”

It was only a matter of time before a gamer who was also into personal development mashed the two together. I can’t say that I was the first to do it, but I can say that I never heard or read pwning life before I thought of it. The next day I bought the domain and made a video about my idea (January 19th, 2008, almost 3 years ago).

I had the option of getting pwnlife.com, lifepwned.com, lifepwning.com or any other combination I could think of. The reason I chose pwninglife.com was because it felt more “zen.” From my experience with and understanding of life, it isn’t something that you learn to master and then you’re done with. It’s a never ending process of continual refinement. It’s never in the past tense. You can never say “I pwned life, I don’t need to do that again.” You’re ALWAYS pwning life!

Getting The Clan Back Together

So that’s where the name came from. Either that same day, or shortly after I decided that I wanted to write a book, build a community and do seminars. I had a number of failed attempts at community building (choosing the wrong platform, making it to easy or too hard to become a member, etc.) Even with my failed attempts there were people that stuck through the ups and downs of my learning process. Even after practically disappearing for 9 months during the recovery process of my manic episode, people patiently waited for my return.

On September 25th, 2010 (almost exactly one year after being released from the hospital) I got this email:

Hey Casey its Recessive.

Great to see you working on the Kohl’s project and such. I was wondering what happened to the Miltownklan forums, and if they will be started back up any time soon? Are you still working on MTK projects or have they been put on hold temporarily?

Thanks.

We’ll talk about the MilTownKlan and the Kohl’s project another day. What that email did is get the ball rolling again. Shortly after I got that email, I rebuilt the discussion forums for the MilTownKlan. Since I already started working on pwninglife.com when I moved back to Milwaukee in July, it was easy to start building a Pwning Life community again.

Pwning Life Day 1

This post is a little on the long side, but I wrote it before I knew I was going to be blogging everyday. Plus I have a whole week’s worth of posts to edit which I going to hop right to after hitting “publish.”

January 8th, 2011

Today I had the idea of writing this book/blog as part journal and part journey (I bought a calendar to X off each day I write, I should NEVER miss a day). You can experience what I’m experiencing as I share the stories from my past, tell you what I’m doing presently and sculpt my future. That’s what I’ll do each and every day. I’ve never read a book (or blog) like this. That could be a really good thing or a really bad thing. I hope it turns out to be really good. :)

I wish I could tell you everything going on with me in one day, but that would be too much for you to read and too much for me to write. Instead, this will come out in bits and pieces as the days go by. Maybe I’ll post chapters to my blog too (Note: I wrote this before having the idea to blog it every day). That’s enough jibber jabber, lets get started with today’s chapter (post).

I’m going to give you Continue reading

365 Days of Pwning Life

Welcome to PwningLife.com! This blog has turned into a daily journal of sorts. Something to track and share my progress from where I am now to where I want to be 365 days from now. Beginning tomorrow you’ll get an entry from me every day of the week sharing what I’ve worked on that day and how it relates to my goals for the year. I’m also going to share stories from my past (how I got to where I am today) and… We’ll see what happens.

I figure if I write a little bit every day, in a year, I’ll have enough content to fill a book. I already declared that I was going to write this book a year and a half ago. It’s time to make it happen!

I want this to be part autobiographical, part “journal” and part guide helping others bridge the gap from where they are to where they want to be. I’m going to tell you where I am now, where I was a year ago and then where I want to be a year from now.

Where I Am Now

Hi, I’m Casey. Better known online as Continue reading

People have wanted this for a long time and it’s finally here. It’s been a bumpy road figuring out how to best organize a group like this, but I think I’m close to “perfecting” a formulate. :)

I look forward to working with everyone that signs up! :D

Beginning of the Pwning Life System

I uploaded a video a couple days ago describing part of the pwning life system I’m working on (daily goal writing). I also share my goals from last year.

I’ve been silent on this blog while thinking about what to do with it. What are the goals of this blog? Although the goals aren’t sorted yet, I have an idea of the path I expect this blog to take.

Walking The Walk Instead Of…

I love the name of this blog, totally love the idea, but I’ve been hung up on the approach. Originally I was thinking about doing all the “right” things to quickly become an “A-List” blogger.

  • Lots of posts
  • Catchy titles (7 Things You Can Do To Start Pwning Today!)
  • Being active in the comments on other related blogs
  • Network with other A-Listers

Those aren’t bad ideas, it’s just that… I’m not interested in doing them. :P On top of that, I didn’t want to talk about things that might work in theory or have worked for other people without testing them myself first (like that Benjamin Franklin approach to pwning life).

There are a 1001 methods to pwning life. Discussing them all would be… pointless.

Watch Me Do It, Then I’ll Explain How

With all of the experiences I’ve had in life plus things I’ve read I feel like I could write the definitive guide to pwning life but… in reality that isn’t the case (yet!) So instead of acting like it is I’m going to be “keeping it real.” I have big dreams and there is no doubt in my mind they will materialize. A reason why I ramble so much on my personal blog and YouTube account is because I look forward to the day that I “make it” and there being a documented trail from “rags to riches.”

This blog will focus on that journey. You’ll be able to comment on what you think I’m doing right or doing wrong. Give me suggestions and feedback. Make recommendations of books, magazines, articles, blogs, etc. to read. It will be a good time.

That form of the blog will end after I release an autobiography talking about pwning my life, pwning bipolar disorder and “making it.” It will be reborn as a resource and community for people to visit and learn the art of pwning life. I want it to be that resource and community now but… baby steps. ;)

The Beginning of the System

Oh yeah! The beginning of a system. If you didn’t watch that video it’s about a method of daily goal writing to help keep you focused and you move closer to achieving your goals/life dreams. It’s a part of what will eventually be a system for “pwning life.” Another part of the system is forming a mastermind group to work with.

If you’re interested in being a part of the first such group I organize, get on this email list.

I’m reading a bunch of cool books right now and will share what I take from them in the form of blog posts and videos in the future. Until next time!

I Can Has Pwning?

My time has been divided into three parts lately. Playing Halo, going to meetings (about social media/entrepreneurship) and “data mining” (finding the most social media savvy businesses in Milwaukee). Why am I telling you this and what does it have to do with pwning life?

Well, someone from one of the meetings wants to organize a TEDx event in Milwaukee. If you don’t know what TED is, check them out on YouTube or hit up their website. They’re all about teh pwn! TED is a yearly conference that invites a bunch of cool people do 20 minute or so presentations about the awesome stuff they’re working on. TEDx is a locally organized version. While I was researching the steps to bring an event to Milwaukee I ran into a video by Ben huh, the CEO of the cheezburger network. It’s basically the story of how he’s pwning life with a list of 19 life goals. Good stuff!

The Game Layer On Top Of The World

I was going to include both of these videos in one post (and I guess that I kind of am…) But I’m going to save this video for another post so I can rant and rave about it some more. The reason I’m data mining for a list of social media savvy businesses in Milwaukee is because I’m helping with the roll out/launch of an app called SCNVGR. SCVNGR’s goal is to build the “game layer on top of the world.” Sound familiar? :) Check out Seth Priebatsch (SCVNGR’s CEO) TEDx talk about gaming (pwning life?) being the next big thing.

The Ups And Downs Of (Pwning) Life

I have about 3 posts half written, but haven’t had the “juice” to finish them. Even though the large project I was working on ended two weeks ago I’m just now feeling my juice coming back. I thought about forcing posts out of myself to stay “on schedule” but that didn’t feel right. Instead I opted to ride the wave of zoning out, take a break from pwning life and spend some time pwning Halo Reach and the other games I’ve been playing. :)

My recent time spent in a small valley of life gave me the idea of talking about the natural ups and downs a person experiences while pwning life and… just living.

Everyone Wants To Sprint At The Beginning

If there’s one constant with personal development it is people’s excitement at the beginning and wanting to BURST out of the gate full speed. While the initial enthusiasm and energy in the beginning is awesome people start at a pace that’s impossible to keep up (I know, I‘ve been am guilty of that often). Whether someone’s trying to lose weight, learn a language, form a habit or start exercising people run into the same problem. Fast out the gate, burn out, LONG break, start again 6 months to one year later and do the same thing…

How do we break this cycle? Continue reading

Cellphones: The Modern Day Samurai Blade

AHHHH YESSS!!! First I want to say it feels GOOD to be back to writing and thinking about pwning life again! If you didn’t know it, I spent the last 2.5 weeks working on a project to help some schools win a contest. We didn’t win the contest, but I think everyone involved learned a lot and got to meet cool people. You can read a little bit about that over on my personal blog.

Upgrading My Sword

I’m going to share with you guys an analogy I would often talk about with friends. You know how back in the day your sword/weapon was an extension of you (at least that’s how they make it seem in the movies ;) )? Your blade had to be properly balanced, you’d choose an expert blacksmith and you’d get it decorated just for you. Or the way you customize your lightsaber ala Starwars.

Samurai and his katana

Samurai and his katana

Jedi Knights

Jedi Knights

In the past (and in the future? ;) ) you had to protect yourself and your family with the expertise of handling a weapon. In today’s “information age” your “weapon” is the device that allows you to quickly (and skillfully) get and share information. Current cellphones are the ultimate weapon of choice. :)

I just purchased an HTC EVO.

Pwning Life And Digital Katanas

Don’t feel like you NEED to upgrade your blade to properly pwn life. Like I mentioned a couple posts ago, Benjamin Franklin has been Life Hacking/Pwning Life since 1726. Cool phones and the latest technology are not a necessity. That said, we are a bunch of gamers that like cool toys! :D

I’ve had this phone for about 2 weeks now and I must admit, there are some REALLY cool apps for pwning life available. I’ll talk review these apps once I’ve used them long enough to say with certainty that they’ve positively impacted my lifestyle.

One app that I’m feeling REALLY good about after using it only once is RunKeeper (check out my profile). It uses the GPS in your phone to track your miles, route, calories burned and a bunch of other cool stats. You can also make these stats public and friend up with other runners to help stay motivated. Cool stuff.

“Must Have” Apps

Are there any “must have” apps that you use? For the Android and iPhone are both welcome. Let me know in the comments. :)
